"I'm so happy I got Riot's Holiday Blend as an early taste tester. This dark roast is rich. It's complex. It's delicious and my favorite way to start the morning. The flavors remind me of Christmas in a cup."

MEET OUR HEROES
MEET JOSH
Josh began his career in the United States Marine Corps as a field radio operator before serving as an instructor in the Marine Corps Security Force Training Company. That career was cut short after eight years when Josh was medically separated in 2016.
Post Traumatic Stress from multiple deployments had left Josh struggling with nearly every activity of daily living. Crippling anxiety and an overwhelming sense of doom had taken over his life. Even though he was strong and in good physical health, Josh was reluctant to leave his home and could no longer drive by himself.
Like many veterans in his position, Josh’s journey to recovery led him down many paths, including pairing with a service dog.
And like many veterans with poorly trained dogs, no handling experience, and minimal “instructions” on how to work with a specialized canine, Josh’s service dog experience didn’t work out.
He was encouraged by fellow Marine veteran and Rescue 22 Foundation (R22) service dog recipient Brandon Rumbaugh to try again.
R22’s board member and master trainer, Will Aching of Ridgeside K9 Carolinas, drove to Pennsylvania to meet Josh and his family to better understand their needs.
Josh and his family needed a dog that could perform its tasks in a home with four young children and two other dogs.
Will thought he had the perfect dog in mind.
RION BECOME RIOT
Rion (now called Riot) was a young golden retriever living with her breeder. Small in stature, she was not suitable for breeding. However, she was big in heart with a huge capacity to learn, so the owner wanted to make sure her dog could still reach her potential and have a special job helping someone in need.
She donated Rion to the Rescue 22 Foundation, and Will started the dog’s nearly three-year training program.
Like all of R22’s service dogs, Riot was trained to handle specific tasks for her new owner. For Josh, Riot learned skills that would help her interrupt and refocus Josh during moments of extreme anxiety.
She would go to work if she noticed that his leg started shaking or he showed any signs of distress. She would put a paw on Josh’s leg to get his attention or, if he was seated, put her head on his lap to provide comfort.
Since many veterans dealing with PTS can become highly anxious in large groups, Riot learned how to provide crowd control. If Josh is surrounded by many people in close proximity, he gives the command “around.” Riot will begin circling him to create space and a barrier.
Once Riot had learned her tasks, she was ready to move in with Josh and his family.
TWO BECOME ONE
The Rescue 22 integration team delivered Riot to Josh and his family in February 2022…at no cost to Josh.
During the integration, Will spent a week with Josh and his family to ensure the new dynamic duo knew how to work and communicate with each other.
“Rescue 22 and Riot saved my life,” said Josh. “I was overmedicated by the VA and was going nowhere fast. She has turned my life around.”
“With Riot, I can now travel and enjoy my time with my family. This little golden retriever has become my medication,” he added. “My days are better because she is by my side.”
Thanks to the Rescue 22 Foundation, veterans like Josh, and dogs like Riot, can get a second chance at life.
“Rescue 22 has been like a second family to us,” said Josh. “They, and ambassadors like Chris Pratt, have improved the lives of so many veterans. From the bottom of my heart, I can’t thank them enough for the amazing work they have done.”
